Course Overview

One of the most common obstacles people face in their careers is a bad relationship with their boss. Difficult relationships with supervisors lead to missed advancement opportunities, forced resignations and damaged professional reputation.

Managing up simply means focusing on the relationship you have with your boss in order to obtain the best results for you and your boss, as well as your organisation. Actively managing your relationship maximises both your ability and your boss's ability to contribute to the organisation, and it helps you overcome the inevitable conflicts that will occur occasionally.

This one day program aims to develop staff skills especially where staff may not have formal authority but are often responsible for results. These skills are directly applicable to working with more senior staff including direct managers. The program will present a practical framework, tools and a set of skills for 'managing up' in the workplace.

Course Objectives

Throughout this course some of the areas you will cover and learn are:

  • How to use critical information and organisational perspective your supervisor provides you to completely perform your job, while staying in line with the company's growth and direction
  • Your boss can connect you with other areas in the organisation, ensuring your department stays at the core of growth
  • How to use your boss, as your advocate when you need resources and cooperation from other departments or divisions.
  • Managing yourself to do your best work by understanding your goals, seeking and utilising feedback, being appropriately self starting and staying attuned to priorities and changes.
